How I ended up doing only this

Matthew Johnson at lunch, mid conversation

I run Pleiades Consultancy. I started it in March 2026 with no clients, no list and no revenue.

Starting from zero was not new to me. I'd done it before, and I hadn't come to it from a degree.

I dropped out of university and started my own lead generation agency on Upwork. Several B2B companies hired me to go and find them customers, and that is what I did. A 7-figure Amazon agency noticed and scouted me. I didn't apply. Once I was inside it I took their client count from 15 to more than 48. I've also generated qualified leads for merchant cash advance firms, across about as many industries as you can name.

Those numbers are my own account of a job I had. There is no screenshot behind them, so treat them as a thing I'm telling you rather than a thing I'm proving, which is why they aren't on the proof page with everything else on this site. I'm telling you anyway, because it's the part of my history that explains this one. Every job I've had has been the same job underneath: find a business more customers than it had last month. Only the channel keeps moving.

I'd also built an agency with a co-founder before this one. We split on 28 February 2026. He kept the clients we had. I kept the approach, and I started again from zero the following week.

My first recurring client came from a post in a Facebook group. A dental practice. Not a funnel, not an ad account, not a referral network. One useful post, read by one owner who had a problem. I still think about that more than I think about most of what I've built since, because it's the cleanest version of what this whole site is for. Do the work in public, and the people with the problem find you.

What I actually do

I get service businesses recommended by AI assistants.

When somebody needs a dentist or a water damage crew or a bookkeeper now, a lot of them stop typing keywords into Google and start asking. They ask ChatGPT, or they read the AI summary sitting above the search results. They get back two or three names with a sentence of reasoning attached, and most of them ring one of those names.

That answer is built from something. It's built from what your site says, what other sites say about you, what your reviews actually say, and how easy any of it is for a model to retrieve and trust. All of that can be worked on. Most of it isn't being worked on by anybody, which is the only reason this is a business.

I audited more than 60 local businesses before I'd sold a single retainer, across dental, med spa, roofing, HVAC and plumbing. Over 90% of them had no presence in AI answers at all. That included chains with more than a thousand locations. Those are my audits and my scoring method, so read it as what I found, not as a survey of the industry.

What I work on directly

I'm the one on the accounts.

That isn't a humble-brag about hustle, it's a constraint I've chosen and it shapes what I'll take on. I do the visibility diagnosis. I write or direct the answer pages. I read the lead logs. When a client rings me because a customer told them “ChatGPT sent me”, I'm the person who hears it first.

I work with dentists, restoration and water damage crews, carpet cleaners, a law firm, a hardware shop and accounting firms. Some of them are round the corner from their customers and some of them serve clients three time zones away, which changed how I think about this: AI search isn't a local-business tactic. It's how people choose a supplier now, and a bookkeeper in another state is chosen the same way as a plumber down the road.

Why I publish

Because of one thing I hear on nearly every sales call.

It isn't “that's too expensive”. In thirty-five conversations with owners about taking this on properly, price came up once. What comes up over and over is a version of this: “I've paid for marketing before, and I genuinely couldn't tell you whether it worked.”

That's not a pricing problem or a scepticism problem. It's an evidence problem, and the industry built it. Thirty-page reports full of numbers that don't connect to anything. Rankings that go up while the phone doesn't ring. Nobody willing to say plainly what they did and what happened next.

So this site is the opposite of that. Everything I claim here has an artifact behind it: a dated screenshot, a lead log, a snapshot you can go and check. Where I've got a good result with a weak record behind it, I say so instead of printing it. There's a claim about one of my clients I'd love to use, and I don't, because the evidence only supports part of it.

I'd rather you check my work than trust my logo wall.

How I work with people

Three ways, and they don't compete.

You can hire me. That's Pleiades, and it's the full system built and run for you, sitting alongside whatever marketing you're already paying for. You don't need to fire anyone to start.

You can learn it. That's AI Search Mastery, the same system written down, for people who'd rather build it themselves.

Or you can just read. One field note a week, free, no call to book. Most people start here and that's the right order.

If you want to see what the assistants say about your business before you speak to anyone, start with the field notes. The first one tells you how to check it yourself in about ten minutes.
